Skiing from the Retreat
In the winter Slovenia changes from a beautiful, sunny country with great mountains to a beautiful, sunny country with great mountains and SNOW. Completely different in feel to the mega-resorts throughout the rest of Europe, Slovenia has a very relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Bags are left in a pile at the bottom of the slope to be picked up on the way home, queues are jovial and chatty, there are more locals skiing than tourists and no distinction is drawn between the two. While you won't find the same number of runs available as you would in Chamonix or Les Tois Vallees, you also won't be asked to pay twenty Euros for a coke and a slice of pizza. The food on the hill is good, filling and no more expensive than anywhere else in the country. Ski school is much cheaper than elsewhere, particularly the one-on-one lessons which cost around €25 per hour.
Kanin
Kanin, twenty-five minutes from the Retreat, has the highest slopes in the country which means it has some of the best and longest lasting snow in the country. Sitting right on the border, this resort has a new link to the Italian slopes of Sella Nevea on the other side of the mountain, doubling the number of lifts and runs available. The altitude of this resort means that the powder and off piste is the best in the country and because it's Slovenia, there isn't the same rush to get there first and leave your mark on the hillside.
Relaxed, friendly, great powder and cheap beer. Life doesn't get much better than that.
