Visit Ljubljana
Largely undiscovered, bristling with charm, and 10000 cultural events a year.
"Ljubljanica River, like the Seine but more manageable, and with Left Bank-like buildings on both sides."
- The Times.
One of the best selections of Baroque architecture in Europe.
When people talk of the beauty of Prague and of Vienna what they often fail to mention is the Slovenian architect who worked on the Castle and church of the Holy Spirit respectively. What is talked about even less is the fact that, having honed his skills abroad, Jože Plecnik returned to his home town of Ljubljana and spent most of his life adding his own stamp to a city already blessed with a medieval castle and strong Renaissance and Baroque influence. Today it remains as jaw-droppingly beautiful as he intended.
With an enchanting old town centre encircling the river, a watchful hilltop castle, museums, galleries and countless cafes and restaurants, Ljubljana remains Europe's most delightful small city. Around 10,000 cultural events take place every year, many of them supported or hosted by the city's respected music, art and theatre colleges. If you feel the need to burn some plastic, designer shops litter the financial area of the city centre. The more conservative spenders might prefer the relaxed fun of the weekend flea market in one of the city's central piazzas.
Less than an hour's drive from the Farmhouse, Ljubljana is a vibrant, youthful city with something to offer every visitor, even if that something involves doing very little.
